TMS Billing Services
Billing for TMS clinics, from a team that knows TMS claims inside and out.
TMS clinics are our specialty. Becker Credentialing Services provides TMS billing for TMS clinics and behavioral health practices that offer transcranial magnetic stimulation, in any state. A TMS course means many sessions and many claims for every patient, and we keep them moving: benefit checks, payment plans, claims, follow-up, payment posting, and reporting.
The TMS Codes We Bill
TMS has its own set of CPT codes, and getting them right on every session is what keeps a course of treatment paid from start to finish.
| What it covers | CPT code |
|---|---|
| The first TMS treatment, including cortical mapping, motor threshold determination, and delivery and management of the treatment | 90867 |
| Each later TMS treatment session in the course (delivery and management) | 90868 |
| A later session that includes re-determining the patient's motor threshold, along with delivery and management | 90869 |
Which code applies to each session, and how often, depends on the treatment provided and each insurance company's rules. We bill the related behavioral health visits for TMS patients too, such as psychiatric evaluations and medication management.
Why TMS Billing Takes Specialized Attention
TMS isn't billed like a typical therapy visit.
Many claims per patient
A TMS course is a series of sessions over several weeks, so one patient can mean dozens of claims. A small error at the start can repeat on every one of them.
Approved dates and session counts
Insurers usually approve TMS for a set number of sessions within specific dates. Claims for sessions outside those dates, or beyond the approved count, can be denied.
Larger patient balances
Deductibles and coinsurance add up across a full course. Checking benefits up front and offering payment plans keeps patients informed and balances from going unpaid.
Documentation for every session
Each TMS claim needs to be supported by the session's documentation. Claims that don't match what was documented are a common source of denials.
